Jazz Impressions photoalbum

New photoalbum on jazz imressions released at Bánk Jazz Festival

The exclusive photo album Jazz Impressions, published with the support of the Swing Jazz Culture Foundation, was presented at the 9th Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival. The book brings together the remarkable photographs of Zoltán Kárpáti.

The album features photographs taken by the photographer at the Bánk Jazz Festival between 2008 and 2011. The emotions conveyed by the book are perhaps best expressed in Kárpáti Zoltán’s own words:

“It suddenly begins… you watch, you listen, you lose yourself in it, and then something moves inside you, and you realize that your heart is already dancing. You have to move closer, become part of it, and there you are, carried away by the music. Some people close their eyes and suddenly they are far away, already flying. My eyes, however, open wider, searching out the little wonders, excitedly looking for the secret of how to capture and preserve the fleeting sounds and the rhythm. I have read that the lens of a camera does not lie. It is objective. I am no longer so sure. The photograph taken by the photographer standing beside me is completely different, even though we listened to the same music. Why shouldn’t my picture be subjective, reflecting the way I experience it? These are my impressions. Jazz impressions.”

At the 9th Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival, held in Bánk, Zoltán Kárpáti was due to sign copies of his book at the restaurant of Tó Hotel on Saturday, June 23.

The two-day event, featuring outstanding musicians from the world of jazz, also included several special programs alongside the presentation of the book.

The program included a photography workshop with photographer and artist János Eifert, as well as a film screening held in memory of Joe Murányi.

In connection with the Jazz Festival, the organizing Swing Jazz Culture Foundation also announced a photography competition dedicated to the world of jazz.

The historical photography competition

The attached 2012 poster announced the competition under the title “Jazz Fotópályázat” (Jazz Photography Competition). Its purpose was to draw attention to the values of jazz, the cultural, artistic and natural experiences associated with the Bánk Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival, and the relationship between music and nature, captured through the tools of photography.

Photographs were accepted in three categories:

1. Jazz
2. Louis Armstrong Jazz Festival
3. Jazz Behind the Scenes

The poster stated that one prize would be awarded in each category, with each prize worth HUF 50,000.

The main prize was a three-day, two-night stay for two people at the Tó Wellness Hotel in Bánk.
