Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm / F1.2 ASPH lens

The Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 is an ultra-fast medium telephoto prime lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras, combining an F1.2 aperture, 85mm-equivalent focal length, advanced optics and POWER O.I.S. for exceptional portrait photography and low-light performance.

An ultra-fast F1.2 medium telephoto prime lens designed especially for portrait photography

Panasonic introduced the LEICA DG NOCTICRON 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH. / POWER O.I.S. (H-NS043), a Micro Four Thirds lens designed for LUMIX G cameras. With a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 85mm, the lens occupies the classic medium telephoto range that is particularly well suited to portrait photography. Leica Camera AG introduced the “NOCTICRON” designation to distinguish this new high-performance lens.

The lens combines an exceptionally fast F1.2 maximum aperture with Panasonic’s POWER O.I.S. optical image stabilization system. This combination allows photographers to work with fast shutter speeds and achieve a shallow depth of field, while the optical stabilization system helps reduce the effects of camera shake when shooting in challenging lighting conditions.

The popular 42.5mm medium telephoto focal length is particularly effective for creating a strong sense of depth and perspective in portrait photography. Combined with the extremely wide F1.2 aperture, it allows photographers to produce images with a beautifully soft background, pronounced subject separation and a distinctive creative character.

The optical construction incorporates two aspherical elements, one ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) element and one UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) element. This sophisticated optical design minimizes spherical aberration and distortion while maintaining a high level of image quality across the frame.

Flare and ghosting are also effectively controlled by a Nano Surface Coating applied to the lens elements. The coating uses Panasonic’s advanced nanotechnology to reduce unwanted reflections and preserve contrast, particularly when strong light sources are present within or near the frame.

The lens is designed to deliver high contrast and excellent resolving power, supported by an advanced internal focusing system. Internal focusing also contributes to the lens’s practical handling by keeping the overall length stable during focusing.

A newly developed stepping motor provides fast and quiet autofocus operation. This makes the lens suitable not only for still photography but also for situations where discreet focusing is important, including portrait sessions and other environments where autofocus noise could be distracting.

The built-in POWER O.I.S. system complements the lens’s exceptionally fast aperture. The optical stabilizer is designed to compensate for both small, rapid movements and larger, slower camera movements, helping photographers achieve sharp images even when shooting handheld in low-light conditions.

The combination of an 85mm-equivalent focal length, F1.2 aperture, optical image stabilization and sophisticated optical construction makes the Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 ASPH a particularly compelling portrait lens for the Micro Four Thirds system. Its specifications target photographers who want strong subject isolation, smooth background rendering and reliable performance in demanding lighting situations.
