1899. november 30-án született Nyíregyházán, Pelach Sándor néven, a család hét gyermeke közül elsőként. Ifjú korában szeretett énekelni, egy időben az operaénekesi pálya iránt érdeklődött. Édesapja ennek nem örült, mondván, ő nem nevel urakat! Mivel szülei ebben az időben különböző fürdőket és strandokat béreltek, üzemeltettek (Pünkösdfürdő, Csillaghegy) végül az úszómesteri pálya mellett kötött ki. Abban az időben az úszómester nemcsak a medencékben fürdőzők biztonságára ügyelt, hanem úszásoktatással is foglalkozott. Később, amikor édesapjuk elhagyta a családot, mind a heten Pelachról Pusztaira cserélték a vezetéknevüket. Az első világháború idején katona volt, majd ismét fürdőkben dolgozott.
