After identifying the subject, we therefore need to plan the photograph \u2014 in other words, we should already be able to visualize the finished image in our mind before reaching into our camera bag and mounting the appropriate lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planning a composition is not an easy task, because the human eye has a fixed focal length, corresponding approximately to that of a standard lens: around 50 mm on a 35mm-format camera, which is roughly equal to the diagonal of the image frame. With an APS-C (Canon) or DX (Nikon) digital image sensor, this value is approximately 30 mm. When using a different focal length, therefore, a good photographer needs to understand how the scene perceived by the eye will change in the resulting photograph depending on the characteristics of the lens being used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lenses can be classified according to several criteria. We distinguish between prime lenses and zoom lenses, whose focal length can be varied within certain limits. Within these categories, lenses with a focal length shorter than the standard focal length are called wide-angle lenses, while optics with a focal length longer than the standard are known as telephoto lenses. It follows that there are also zoom lenses that meet both criteria, although with limitations, since such lenses generally cannot cover extremely short or extremely long focal lengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lenses can also be divided into further subcategories, such as small-, medium- and super-wide-angle lenses, as well as short-, medium- and long- or super-telephoto lenses. These designations indicate how far the lens moves below or above the standard focal length and therefore what kind of performance it can provide. Another decisive factor is the lens&#8217;s maximum aperture. The smaller the f-number, the less light is required to take a photograph. In other words, a fast lens allows us to use a faster shutter speed, reducing the risk of camera shake, or to use a wider aperture, giving us greater opportunities to exploit differences in sharpness between the foreground and background. It is also important that by selecting a lower ISO sensitivity, we can avoid excessive grain or digital image noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the types mentioned above, the range of lenses includes several specialized designs, such as macro lenses for close-up photography, fisheye lenses with extremely short focal lengths, and lenses that create special visual effects or help correct certain parts of an image by changing the relative position of their internal optical elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wide-Angle Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The characteristic feature of this type is its wide angle of view, making it suitable for capturing large spaces in both horizontal and vertical directions. A large portion of the scene can fit into the frame. Since we cannot always move as far away from the subject as we would like, a wide-angle lens ensures, for example, that the top of a church does not get left out of the photograph. It also makes it easier to compose the foreground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This problem is particularly pronounced with digital SLR cameras because, apart from the professional models at the top of the range equipped with a 24\u00d736 mm image sensor corresponding to 35mm film, most camera bodies use smaller APS-C or DX sensors. This effectively reduces the standard focal length from 50 mm to approximately 30 mm, meaning that the wide-angle range also shifts toward shorter focal lengths. The situation can be even more restrictive with compact cameras. Although a wide-angle conversion lens can provide a solution, and these accessories are not particularly expensive, the resulting image quality often leaves something to be desired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 24\u201370 mm lenses offered for SLR camera bodies and commonly referred to as standard zooms provide an adequate wide-angle range on full-frame or 35mm-format cameras. On cameras equipped with an APS-C or DX-sized sensor, however, they no longer provide the same level of wide-angle coverage, since they produce an image equivalent to approximately a 36 mm focal length on a 35mm camera. With such a camera body, a 17\u201355 mm lens (equivalent to approximately 25\u201380 mm on 35mm film) can be used successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conventional super-wide-angle zoom lenses are expensive and large, so it is often better to choose optics specifically designed for smaller sensors. These are cheaper, and their model names usually include an indication that they are intended for digital cameras, such as Nikon&#8217;s DX or Canon&#8217;s EF-S designation. They can often deliver better results than their conventional counterparts while also saving the photographer from potentially spending several hundred thousand forints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what exactly can wide-angle lenses do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With their broad angle of view, they can present even an everyday viewpoint from a completely different perspective. Nearby objects and the foreground appear larger than they really are, while depth of field increases, allowing both nearby and distant subjects to appear sharp, particularly when using a small aperture. Most importantly, the wide angle allows more of the foreground to fit into the frame, creating an interesting setting for the main subject. This can be particularly useful for landscapes and large subjects such as buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another practical advantage is that when shooting handheld at 28 mm, a shutter speed of around 1\/30 second can often be used safely without significant risk of camera shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, these advantages can become disadvantages, for example when taking portraits. Body parts closer to the front element, such as the nose or an extended foot, may appear larger than they really are, causing the proportions of the body or face to become distorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A disadvantage of average or lower-quality wide-angle lenses is that the corners of the image may suffer from vignetting and become darker. Astigmatism can also cause problems, producing blurred areas toward the edges of the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Telephoto Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In everyday terminology, lenses with focal lengths of 70\u2013110 mm are considered short telephoto lenses, those from 120\u2013200 mm medium telephoto lenses, and lenses above 200 mm long telephoto lenses. Professionals also use much longer optics, reaching 600\u20131000 mm, which are referred to as supertelephoto lenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What appears as a disadvantage with wide-angle lenses can become a useful advantage for owners of cameras with APS-C or DX-sized sensors when using telephoto lenses. An ordinary 80\u2013200 mm lens, for example, produces an image corresponding to a 120\u2013300 mm lens on such a camera. The only potential problem is that the lower limit of 120 mm may sometimes be too long for a particular shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different telephoto lens types have their own fields of application. Short telephoto lenses can be used to photograph larger sections of landscapes or full-length portraits, while medium telephoto lenses are suitable for subjects such as architectural details. The capabilities of long telephoto lenses are particularly useful for sports and wildlife photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telephoto lenses appear to visually &#8220;compress&#8221; the subjects in an image, making objects and people seem closer to one another than they really are. They show relatively little of the environment surrounding the main subject, making it possible to eliminate distracting background elements and concentrate attention on the subject being photographed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These lenses have a shallow depth of field, which becomes progressively narrower toward the longest focal length. As a result, the background behind a sharply focused subject becomes blurred and the subject appears to &#8220;pop&#8221; out of the image. This is why precise focusing is particularly important, especially when using a wide aperture, which further reduces depth of field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When using telephoto lenses longer than 160 mm, the risk of camera shake increases. This can be avoided by using a tripod or a short shutter speed, such as 1\/500\u20131\/2000 second. Optical image stabilization can also provide a solution, although lenses equipped with this technology are considerably more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lens hood should always be used with telephoto lenses, because light entering from the side is more likely to cause flare than with shorter focal lengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telephoto performance can be significantly affected by chromatic aberration, or color fringing. To minimize this problem, it is worth choosing optics equipped with low-dispersion (ED) lens elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Macro Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macro lenses are designed for photographing very small subjects at extremely close distances, such as insects, small flowers or objects. They can provide a reproduction ratio of up to 1:1, meaning that the subject appears on the image at its actual size. Some lenses can even provide greater magnification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For optimum image quality, macro lenses generally contain a relatively small number of lens elements specially corrected for close focusing. They produce their sharpest images at short distances, typically around 20\u201350 cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macro lenses can also be used for general photography because they can focus at infinity. However, general-purpose lenses will usually provide better image quality for conventional subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A characteristic feature of macro optics is their very small maximum aperture. Values of f\/22 or f\/32 can generally be selected, while the best models may even offer f\/45.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The appropriate focal length for a macro lens depends on the subject. The best macro lenses are usually primes. Macro zooms are less common, generally slower and relatively expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it is not possible to approach the subject closely enough, a tele-macro lens is a good choice, as it can provide the required magnification from a distance of 50\u201360 cm. This is also advantageous when the photographer&#8217;s or camera&#8217;s proximity would interfere with the lighting of the subject or cast a shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we do not want to invest in a dedicated macro lens, we can choose a prime or zoom lens that has a macro setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mirror Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mirror lens is a specialized type of long-focal-length telephoto lens. Inside the lens, light is reflected multiple times by mirrors before passing through corrective optical elements and reaching the image plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared with conventional long telephoto lenses, mirror lenses are smaller and lighter, and their prices are also relatively modest. Mirror lenses are generally fixed-focal-length designs, cannot be stopped down, and have relatively low light-gathering capability. For these reasons, they are used relatively rarely in modern digital photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fisheye Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These extremely short-focal-length and generally very expensive lenses take their name from the fisheye, which can perceive a viewing angle of approximately 180 degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their focal length is typically around 10 mm, while versions producing an almost 360-degree circular image can have focal lengths of only 6\u20138 mm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extremely wide angle of view makes it possible to create interesting images, but their applications are quite limited. Everyday photography is generally closer to a realistic representation of the world, something this type of lens cannot provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soft-Focus Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High-quality lenses produce extremely sharp images, which can sometimes be undesirable. A soft-focus lens renders image details softly \u2014 <strong>not out of focus<\/strong>. The degree of softness can generally be adjusted on the lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical applications include portraits, abstract landscapes and cityscapes, all of which can acquire a distinctive appearance when photographed with this type of lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A similar effect can also be achieved with a standard lens by attaching a soft-focus filter or conversion lens. Such accessories are available in different strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Image-Stabilized (IS) Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common cause of blurred photographs is camera movement. The risk increases in proportion to focal length, particularly in poor lighting conditions, when longer exposure times are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An image stabilizer (IS \u2013 Image Stabilizer) is an optical system in which an optical element is moved by sensors in the opposite direction to camera movement, thereby compensating for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When using a tripod, the stabilizer should be switched off because the moving optical element may continue to react to minor movements and can slightly soften the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tilt-Shift Lenses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The special feature of this type of lens is that the position of its internal optical elements can be changed relative to one another. The lenses can be shifted and\/or tilted relative to the film or sensor plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to allowing special visual effects, the greatest advantage of these lenses is their ability to correct perspective when the camera cannot be positioned freely in relation to the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, when photographing a building from below, perspective distortion causes the vertical lines to converge in the image. A shift lens can correct this, keeping the vertical lines parallel in the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tilt-shift lenses are also useful when the subject is not parallel to the film or sensor plane. By tilting the lens, it is possible to achieve greater depth of focus along the plane of the subject, so that both the near and distant portions can be rendered sharply when this would not be possible with a conventional lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teleconverters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supertelephoto lenses are beyond the budget of many photographers because of their relatively high prices. A teleconverter, however, can extend the focal length of a smaller telephoto lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two common types are available: one increases the focal length by 1.4\u00d7, while the other doubles it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good results can only be achieved with relatively fast lenses because a teleconverter reduces the effective aperture. This can also interfere with the operation of the autofocus system. At the same time, the available shutter speed may decrease significantly, increasing the risk of camera shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conversion Lenses and Filters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Various filters can be attached to the thread of a lens&#8217;s front element. These can be used to control the amount of light reaching the image sensor, such as with neutral-density filters; to reduce reflections from shiny surfaces, using polarizing filters; or to create special visual effects with effect filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The range of lenses is therefore quite extensive, and it is clear that a single photographic task can often be approached in several different ways. The rules are not necessarily set in stone, and ultimately the photographs we create should primarily reflect our own way of seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Illustrative
